Repointing
Remove and replace cracked or failing ridge pointing to keep water out and ridge caps secure.
Repointing is the process of replacing the mortar or flexible compound that seals and holds the ridge capping on a tiled roof. Over time sun, heat, wind and movement cause pointing to crack, shrink and fall away, which leaves the ridge exposed to water entry.
Our team inspects the ridge and hip lines, removes pointing that has failed and applies fresh pointing so the capping is sealed and secure again. Where capping tiles are loose or damaged we can re-bed or replace them as part of the job.
Signs your roof may need repointing
Cracked or crumbling pointing
Visible cracks, gaps or pieces of pointing on the ground or in the gutters are a clear sign the sealing layer is breaking down.
Loose or shifting ridge caps
If capping tiles move, sit unevenly or have visible gaps underneath, the bedding that holds them has weakened.
Water stains or leaks
Marks on ceilings near the ridge line or dampness in the roof space can point to water getting in through failed pointing.
Faded or flaking surface
Old pointing that has lost its colour or surface finish is usually near the end of its working life.
What the work involves
We start with an assessment of the ridge and hip lines and explain what needs to be removed, re-bedded or replaced. Loose and failed pointing is cleared away, the area is prepared, and new pointing is applied and finished neatly along the line of the roof.
Repointing is often done together with a roof wash, repairs or roof painting, because the roof is already accessible and the surface is clean and ready. Ask us about combining the work when you call.
We provide a rain warranty with every leak fix and repair, once we are engaged to proceed with the scope of work after the quote.
